Classroom Policies
ELL Read 180 and ELL Academic Reading

Definition: English Language Development (ELD) are structured English Emersion Classes designed to meet the needs of those students who fit into one of the following categories:
  1. Non-English speaking student
  2. Limited English speaking student
AZ law now states those students who do not pass the language assessment (AZELLA) will be enrolled in four hours of ELD per day (if you pass certain parts of the test, you might be eligible for less ELD classes)

Goal: The ELD classes facilitate the education of students who speak a language other than English. The ELD Classes are designed to assist students in the mastery of the English language and to work effectively within the culture of the United States.

Areas of Concentration: The ELD classes incorporate the four basic skill areas of the English language:
  1. Listening
  2. Speaking
  3. Reading
  4. Writing
Student Evaluation

You as an ELL student will be graded in all four of the skill areas listed above. Grades will also be based on participation, class work, homework, quizzes, and tests. There will also be a literary analysis test that will be given second semester (PBA). Work completed by you will be graded and recorded according to the following scale:
90-100% of the total points possible =1 or A
80-89% of the total points possible   =2 or B
70-79% of the total points possible   =3 or C
60-69% of the total points possible   =4 or D
59% and below will result in failing the class and repeating it next year—this is not an option for you—if you have trouble, we will work hard to help you pass.

Requirements for class: Students need to pass the district assessments and have a passing grade in class to receive credit and move up to the next level of ELD classes.  If you are not able to complete the coursework at the required level, you will attend summer school to catch up.

Citizenship: You will be given a grade based on your attitude, and cooperation towards me and Ms. Hovious, towards your work and toward your classmates. I expect your full attention when I am talking or anyone else is speaking in front of the class. The classroom is for learning and if you disturb learning in any way, then you are disrupting class and there will be consequences.

The key to success is for us all to respect each other—we all have feelings and if you remember to show respect to all, we will have a great year!

Course Content: This class is a two-period block which combines Read 180 and ELL Academic Reading. It emphasizes the building of reading comprehension through daily small group work, computer work, and independent reading. Students will be expected to read daily and use the computer reading software. This class will also emphasize the elements of literature.

Care of Equipment: You are lucky to be using computer equipment, and you are expected to be responsible in the handling of all the equipment including the books, tapes, headphones, and CD players. Damage to any Read 180 property or taking of any materials will result in a trip to the principal.

NO, No’s for class:
  • Food and drinks (you can have water but not at the computers)
  • Writing on the desks or in the books
  • Bad languages
  • Rudeness or put downs
  • Cell phones, pagers, beepers, I pods, or any other electronic device (they must be out of sight and not heard during class)
Consequences for Poor Choices
The 6-Step Classroom Violations Report will be used. Consequences are as follows:

Step 1: Conference with student
Step 4: Administrative Referral
Step 2: Call to parent/guardian
Step 5: Class closure, pending parent conference
Step 3: Detention
Step 6: Class closure with loss of credit

Note: At my discretion, a detention may be written in lieu of a step on the Six-Step form.

BE POLITE, WORK HARD, AND SHOW RESPECT. MOST OF ALL HAVE A GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
