ELL Reading

English Language Learner
Information Sheet

Definition: English Language Development (ELD) are structured English Emersion Classes designed to meet the needs of those students who fit into one of the following categories:
1. Non-English speaking student
2. Limited English speaking student

AZ law now states those students who do not pass the language assessment (AZELLA) will be enrolled in four hours of ELD per day (if you pass certain parts of the test, you might be eligible for less ELD classes)

Goal: The ELD classes facilitate the education of students who speak a language other than English. The ELD Classes are designed to assist students in the mastery of the English language and to work effectively within the culture of the United States.

Areas of Concentration: The ELD classes incorporate the four basic skill areas of the English language:
1. Listening
2. Speaking
3. Reading
4. Writing

Student Evaluation

You as an ELL student will be graded in all four of the skill areas listed above. Grades will also be based on classwork, homework, quizzes and tests. Work completed by you will be graded and recorded according to the following scale:
90-100% of the total points possible =1 or A
80-89% of the total points possible   =2 or B
70-79% of the total points possible   =3 or C
60-69% of the total points possible   =4 or D
59% and below will result in failing the class and repeating it next year—this is not an option for you—if you have trouble, we will work hard to help you pass.

Requirements for class: Students need to pass the district assessments and have a passing grade in class to receive credit and move up to the next level of ELD classes. If you are not able to complete the coursework at the required level, you will attend summer school to catch up.

Class Rules:1. No talking when the teacher is talking
2. Bring all needed materials to class
3. Be in your seat prior to the tardy bell ringing.
4. Show respect to all.
5. No electronic devices

Tardies and Absences: Greenway’s attendance policy will be strictly enforced. If you are tardy you will go to the sweep room and you will have to make up the classwork. Seven tardies results in loss of credit from this class and you will need to take it again next year. You are expected to be in class everyday in order to learn English and prepare for the AIMS graduation test. If you are absent or know you will be absent it is your job to notify Mrs. Mason and make up any work you missed. Twelve absences can cause you to lose credit for the class and would require you to take it again next year! Sweep counts as an absences.

Materials: You are expected to come to class prepared with pen or pencil, spiral notebook and paper, a folder, and books everyday.

Consequences for Poor Choices

The 6-Step Classroom Violations Report will be used. Consequences are as follows:
Step 1: Conference with student             Step 4: Administrative Referral
Step 2: Call to parent/guardian               Step 5: Class closure, pending parent conference
Step 3: Detention                                   Step 6: Class closure with loss of credit

Note: At my discretion, a detention may be written in lieu of a step on the Six-Step form.

Have a great and successful year by working hard. Attitude is Everything!!!
