Cross Country Swept their Victory!
Posted on 11/3/2009

On Friday our Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Cross Country Team not only won the Region Championships…they set history in the process.  The boys’ team scored a perfect score by sweeping the top five places….Never before in 40 years has this ever been accomplished.  Juniors Joseph Walker and Andy Olson battled stride for stride for 3 miles before Walker grabbed the individual regional championship in the home stretch with Olson taking the silver runner-up medal.  Nathan Duell, Dustin Martin and Eric Brannick then iced the top five sweep with their 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishes with Aaron Walth and Jean Welton close behind.  An “incredible” victory with a perfect score.

Greenway's Lady Demons cross country team also set new records for Greenway history by winning the team's FIFTH region championship IN A ROW!!!  They added to this historical event with an even more significant record that showcases just how strong their team spirit and ability really is--ALL SEVEN RUNNERS FINISHED IN THE TOP ELEVEN PLACES OF THE REGION MEET!!  This extraordinary team includes Shayla Freeman as the individual region champ, Kayla Freeman as the runner-up, Jaime Patnode in 4th place, Ali Ingram in 6th, Kristi Cook in 7th, Nadia Poindexter in 8th, and Bre O'Farrell in 11th place.

Both teams now qualify for the State Championship Meet this Saturday at Cave Creek Golf Course.  When you see these athletes, congratulate them for an incredible job in representing Greenway in an undefeated season and wish them luck at state this Saturday!
