DECA Members Succeed at State
Posted on 3/6/2009

Twenty-five of Greenway DECA’s members took on the challenge to prepare, travel and compete at the Arizona State DECA Conference last week.  The conference was held at the Tucson Convention Center, March 3-4, 2009.  Two types of competition occur at this conference.   The first type of competition is written projects that students spend time researching and writing on a Marketing topic of their choice.  These projects vary in length from 11 to 30 pages.  The second type of competition consists of a 100 question written test and a role-play situation.  Role-plays are marketing situations given to a student, after receiving the situation, the student then has 10-30 minutes to prepare a marketing plan and 10 minutes to present it to a judge.

Students put in much time and effort studying for tests, and practicing role plays in order to be prepared.  All competitors did very well.  Greenway DECA would like to congratulate the following members:  the team of Truitt Hartle and Jordan Rosenfield won 1st place in Financial Literacy Promotion Project, Truitt and Jordan also won 3rd place in Financial Management Team Decision Making.  Within this event, Truitt won 2nd place for his written test score, and the team won 1st place in the role-play situation.  Also placing were Kory Knight with a top five test score and a top five role-play score in the Retail Merchandising Services event.  Steven Shively also placed with a top five role-play score in the Restaurant and Food Service Management Event.

Truitt and Jordan will go on to compete at the National DECA conference in Anaheim, CA, April 28-May 2, 2009.  Good luck team.
