Senior Information – Spring, 2012 

Dear Seniors and Parents: 

This letter has been prepared to help you plan and prepare for graduation.  Graduation is still weeks away, but plans and arrangements are being made now to assure a successful commencement.  This memo is NOT to be considered an indication that your son or daughter will graduate.  All seniors must meet the State of Arizona and the Glendale Union High School District Board of Education requirements to receive a diploma.  Students who do not meet these requirements will not be permitted to take part in the graduation ceremony.  I am providing this letter to inform you of the plans, arrangements and dates in place at this time.

 IMPORTANT DATES

  • Friday, April 27 – Very Possible Senior Failure letters mailed
  • Friday, May 11 - All outside transcripts due (GUHSD Online, GCC, etc.)
  • Monday, May 21 – Honors and Awards Ceremony – 7 p.m. in the Auditorium
  • Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25  – final exams for ALL seniors
  • Friday, May 25 – Last school day for ALL seniors
  • Wednesday, May 30 - Senior breakfast and graduation practice

 ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES - Seniors need to pay close attention to the number of absences and tardies that they have accumulated in their classes.  Credit may be withheld from students whose absences/tardies reach 13 regardless of the grade being achieved.

 GRADUATION CEREMONY Thursday, May 31, 2012, 4:00 P.M. at Phoenix First Assembly Church.  The address is 13613 N. Cave Creek Rd.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 4:00 p.m. Graduates need to be in line no later than 3:30 p.m. All family and guests will require tickets. All students will be wearing green caps and gowns this year.

 Due to the seating limitations at Phoenix First Assembly, and in order to fairly accommodate all of the families of the graduates, the maximum amount of tickets that any one student will receive will be 8.  Tickets will be distributed on Friday, May 25, in your Government class. 

 Phoenix First Assembly prohibits any disruptive items.  This includes items such as air horns, balloons and flower arrangements (obstructs others’ view), and any other item that the site deems inappropriate.  Guests who do not comply with their policy will be escorted from the ceremony.

 GRADUATION PRACTICE  - On Wednesday, May 30, the Senior Class will host a breakfast for all seniors in the cafeteria from 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. This activity will be followed by graduation practice from 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Attendance at graduation practice is mandatorySeniors who do not attend the graduation practice will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.  Seniors are expected to arrive on time and stay for the duration of the practice.  Seniors must dress appropriately in compliance with the district and school dress code. Caps and gowns will be distributed at the end of graduation practice. Students must present their ID in order to receive their cap and gown.  Seniors will be expected to leave the campus immediately after receiving their caps and gowns.

CLEARANCE OF DEBTS AND TEXTBOOK RETURN - All textbooks, library books and locks must be returned and debts paid by Friday, May 25 in order to receive your cap and gown and to participate in the graduation ceremony.

 PARTICIPATION IN GRADUATION - All seniors are encouraged to participate in the commencement ceremony.  If any senior is unable to participate, then he or she may request to be excused by contacting Ms. Reed.

 If you or your student do not want to participate in a ceremony and would rather have a celebration, then the student should not participate.  Our intent is to provide a ceremony that is dignified and orderly, providing lasting memories for everyone.  Proper ceremony behavior is expected of all graduates and guests and will be strictly enforced.  Anyone not displaying appropriate conduct will be escorted out of the ceremony.

 Seniors who choose to participate in the graduation ceremony are expected to dress appropriately. Appropriate attire for the gentlemen includes dress pants, dress shirt and dress shoes. Appropriate attire for the ladies includes dress slacks with a blouse or a dress with dress shoes.  CUT-OFF SHORTS, TENNIS SHOES AND “FLIP FLOPS” ARE NOT CONSIDERED APPROPRIATE ATTIRE.  STUDENTS DRESSED INAPPROPRIATELY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE.

 Seniors may not decorate their cap or gown.  The only acceptable additions to be worn are the tassel, senior medallion or honor cords.  Please do not bring anything that you will have to carry.

ANY SENIOR STUDENT TRESPASSING ON THE GREENWAY CAMPUS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS, OR INVOLVED WITH ANY DESTRUCTIVE OR DISRUPTIVE ACTIVITIES PRIOR TO GRADUATION MAY NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONY.

REFUNDS - Refunds may be made on the cap/gown and announcements for the following reasons: 

 a)  if the student does not graduate

b) if the student moves

c) as long as the garment is not used.  Refunds must be requested in writing prior to
