Chess Team State Championship Results

The Greenway High Chess Team recently competed in the Team state championship.  After two grueling days of competition against the finest teams in the state, the team finished in a tie for 4th place after falling to University High School in the final round.  Although the Demons were defeated in their final match of the season, the teams’ semester long performance was outstanding.  Often out-manned by 6A schools and elite private academies, the Demons raised their level of play to defeat teams we thought were unbeatable.

Additionally, in region play, only the five best players are identified as the top players and receive All-Region recognition.  In the largest region in the state, the Demon squad took an incredible three of the top five All-Region top Boards.   Seniors David Singer, senior Abby Vallelonga and junior Mikayla Tang were all awarded as best boards in the region.    The remainder of the varsity team was manned by, sophomore Jose (Bear) Herrera, freshman Isaac Lopez and freshman Albert More.

Senior David Singer will be traveling to Yuma on Friday to compete in the State Individual Chess Championship.  Based on David’s dominating performance in the Regional Qualifier, David will face off against the finest scholastic chess players in the state.  Only two other players in the district were able to qualify for this event.

Finally, our JV players also performed extremely well this season and are expected to step up next year as members of our varsity team.  The JV team includes Justin Chhor, Alexa Zamora, Angel Islas, Omar Kamil, Eire’ Villella, and Kylie Planty.

Thank you once again for your support throughout the season Greenway.
